Williams captures Municipal tournament

Her birdie on final hole caps five-shot victory

July 18, 1999|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Shirley Williams birdied the last hole to put an exclamation point on a 1-over-par 72 as she won the women's publinx championship by five shots at Forest Park Golf Course yesterday.

It marked the first time the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation had conducted this event, although a similar one had been held in the 1960s and early 1970s before being discontinued.

Williams, a flight winner in the Maryland State women's championship last week, opened with a double bogey, but rolled in two front-nine birdies, then had three more on the back, polishing it off with a two-putt birdie at the 18th.

The program drew 27 entries in three flights. Williams was followed in the championship by Karen Smith (76) and Shirley Keeney (82), a finalist in last month's Metropolitan.

Donna Ensor (82) and Dorethea Greene (90) were the other gross winners. Beth Ennis won a five-hole playoff from Doris King after they had tied for low net with 69s in the first flight. Rachel Smith won low net in the second flight with 63.
