Kennedy family tragedies

Rosemary Kennedy: Daughter of Joseph and Rose. Institutionalized since 1941 because of retardation and failed lobotomy. Now 80 years old.

Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.: Son of Joseph and Rose. Killed in plane crash in 1944 during World War II. He was 29.

Kathleen Kennedy: Daughter of Joseph and Rose. Died in plane crash in 1948. She was 28.

Patrick Bouvier Kennedy: Born nearly six weeks premature to President John F. Kennedy and wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, on Aug. 7, 1963; died Aug. 9, 1963.

John F. Kennedy: Son of Joseph and Rose, 35th president. Assassinated in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. He was 46.

Edward M. Kennedy: Brother of John and Robert. Critically injured in plane crash June 19, 1964; an aide, Edward Moss, was killed.

Robert F. Kennedy: President's brother and former U.S. attorney general, assassinated in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968. He was 42.

Edward M. Kennedy: Drove a car off a bridge on Massachusetts' Chappaquiddick Island on July 18, 1969, after a party. Aide Mary Jo Kopechne was later found dead in submerged car.

Edward Kennedy Jr., Edward's son: Right leg amputated in 1973, when he was 12 years old, because of cancer.

Joseph P. Kennedy II, RFK's son: Involved in 1973 car accident that left a female passenger paralyzed.

David A. Kennedy, RFK's son: Died in 1984 of a drug overdose in a hotel near family vacation home in Palm Beach, Fla.

Patrick J. Kennedy, Edward's son: Now a congressman, sought treatment for cocaine addiction as a teen-ager in 1986.

William Kennedy Smith, nephew of the brothers: Accused of raping a woman in 1991 at the family's Palm Beach estate; acquitted later that year.

Michael L. Kennedy, RFK's son: Accused of having affair with his family's teen-age baby sitter. Killed Dec. 31, 1997, in a skiing accident at Aspen, Colo. He was 39.
