A 16-year-old Hereford High School student was arrested early yesterday and charged in the rape of a Pennsylvania woman near the Gunpowder Falls July 7.

Michael Agostino Perna of the 19000 block of Bollinger Road was charged as an adult with first-degree rape, first-degree assault and a fourth-degree sex offense.

The rape occurred about 5: 30 p.m. as the woman, who has not been identified because of the nature of the assault, her sister and two friends walked in the woods off Gunpowder Road near Hoffmanville Road.

The four women were walking toward an area near Pretty Boy Reservoir, where they planned to go swimming, police said.

As they walked down the trail, the victim -- who had been injured in a car accident and was having trouble with one of her legs -- fell behind.

She told police she was in pain and had sat down to rest before catching up with her friends. As she rested, a man approached her on the trail, said, "Hi, how's it going?" and proceeded down the trail.

By the time the victim got to the swimming area, her companions were ready to leave. On the walk back to the car, she again fell behind, police said, and sat down to rest.

This time, she was grabbed from behind by a man who put his hand over her mouth and told her not to scream, police said.

He forced her to walk up a hill and stop behind a rock, where he sexually assaulted her, police said.

Perna was denied bail and was being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
