Police charge youths in armed robberies at Babe Ruth Museum

A 15-year-old boy was arrested yesterday and charged as a juvenile with armed robberies of the Babe Ruth Museum in the 200 block of Emory St. on June 8 and June 12, police said.

Detectives Alan Savage and Billy Hooper arrested the juvenile at a South Baltimore recreation center, where he worked. The youth was being held at the Northern District's juvenile detention center pending a hearing.

An older youth, Antonio Smith, 17, of the 500 block of S. Paca St. was arrested July 1 and charged as an adult in robberies at the museum June 4 and June 8.

Teen-ager killed in robbery of carryout is identified

A teen-ager shot to death during an apparent robbery of a Northwest Baltimore carryout was identified yesterday as Freddy Poyner, 15, who lived in the Reservoir Hill neighborhood.

Police said Poyner was killed and a friend wounded when armed men walked into the Charles Chinese Food Carryout in the 5200 block of Park Heights Ave. about 3: 30 a.m. Friday and announced a robbery.

Police said one man shot and killed Poyner, who lived in the 2300 block of Linden Ave., and hit the victim's unidentified friend in the head with a black semiautomatic handgun. Police said no arrests had been made.

New Southwest Area Park facilities' dedication Aug. 4

TOWSON -- The Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks is scheduled to dedicate new ball fields, pavilions, playground and comfort station at the Southwest Area Park in Baltimore Highlands on Aug. 4 at 10: 30 a.m. The park facilities were developed by the department and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources through Program Open Space.

Firefighters' challenge will be held at fire museum

LUTHERVILLE -- A Firefighter's Combat Challenge, a grueling fitness test for professional firefighters, will be held at 11 a.m. July 24 at the Fire Museum of Maryland, 1301 York Road.

Competitors from the United States and Canada will be tested wearing full turnout gear and breathing apparatus. They will compete in a series of five drills, a climb to the top of a five-story tower while wearing heavy packs.
