Winfield fire department carnival set for next week

THE WINFIELD Community Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual carnival Monday through July 17.

The carnival will be held on the grounds behind the firehouse at 1320 W. Old Liberty Road (Route 26) between Routes 97 and 94. Parking is free.

Bring the family for games, rides, bingo, lots of food and free entertainment nightly. Special ride nights are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; ride coupons must be picked up in advance at the firehouse. The carnival committee asks that no coolers or pets be brought onto the carnival grounds.

Monday night will feature The Hubcaps at 7: 30 p.m. and the Miss Winfield contest. Tuesday night includes a parade at 7 p.m. and music by country band Young Guns.

Wednesday night's entertainment will be provided by country band Bootleg. Thursday night features Kathy Martin and the Hot Rods beginning at 7: 30 p.m.

A fireworks display and country music by Lonesome Highway are scheduled for Friday night (the rain date for fireworks is July 17). The last night of the carnival will offer country music by Branded, with the grand-prize drawings later that night.

Pit beef, pit ham, pizza, french fries, fried chicken, fried shrimp, hot dogs, hamburgers, crab cakes, and homemade soups will be available, with buffet-style dinners served in the air-conditioned fire hall from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. daily.

Simpson church picnic

Simpson United Methodist Church will sponsor its summer picnic from noon until 5 p.m. tomorrow at the home of Kenneth and Lucille Dorsey, 4209 Old Mill Bottom Road in Mount Airy. There will be plenty of food for sale.

Praise and worship concert

Mount Airy Bible Church, 16700 Old Frederick Road, will sponsor a praise and worship concert at 7 p.m. tomorrow. The concert will feature songwriter-musician Jim Fowler of McLean Bible Church and pianist Judy Russell of Mount Airy Bible Church.

The community is invited to attend. Admission is free.

Vacation Bible schools

Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main St., Mount Airy, will have its Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday.

Classes are open to any child age 4 as of April 1 through those who have completed fifth grade. The theme for this year is SonCastle Faire. Advance registration is $8 ($9 at the door). Scholarships are available. Information: 301-829-0359.

"Summer Seaquest" is the theme for this year's Vacation Bible School sponsored by Mount Airy Presbyterian and Liberty Baptist churches. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday at Liberty Baptist Church in Lisbon. Bible lessons from the life of Jonah will be featured. Information: 301-829-5223 or 410-489-2981.

Lisbon blood drive

The American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lisbon Fire Hall, 1330 Woodbine Road. Donors should call Shirley Fredericksen at 301-854-6751 or Mary Farinholt at 301-829-2657 for an appointment.
