Rattan captures playoff to determine 1st alternate

Chad Perman, from Hunt Valley, and West Streib, who lives in Atlanta, but has relatives living in Baltimore, qualified for the U.S. Juniors championship with solid 36-hole efforts at Green Spring Valley Hunt Club yesterday.

The championship will be played July 27-31 at the Country Club of York, Pa.

With 53 starters after the two available spots, endurance was a key factor in view of the humid, 100-degree weather, although there was an occasional breeze.

Perman won the medal with 73-74147, followed by Streib, 75-73148. John Scott Rattan, from Montgomery Village, whose family used to live here, birdied the second hole to win a playoff from Craig Baxter, from Aberdeen, Scotland, for first alternate.

Perman, 17, who had missed qualifying twice before at Green Spring, credits teacher Ted Sheftic and his American Junior Golf Association experiences for the improvement in his game. A year ago, he shot 160 in this qualifier.

He said: "The first round, a couple of key putts helped me hold it together, and in the afternoon, I started really well, got a little shaky, then finished with a birdie at the ninth."

Streib, 16, was making his first try for the national championship. "I was fine tee to green, but the putts didn't drop," he said.

Streib opted for the Green Spring qualifier because his grandmother and an uncle still live here and because the Atlanta sectional has a tougher field.
