Promotion ceremony set for 57 in Fire Department

Fifty-seven members of the Baltimore Fire Department will be promoted at a ceremony at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Baltimore City Fire Academy, 6720 Pulaski Highway.

Six people will be promoted to battalion chief, 11 to captain, 28 to lieutenant, two to fire inspector and 10 to emergency vehicle driver, said Battalion Chief Hector L. Torres, department spokesman.

They will fill vacancies caused by recent retirements.

Baltimore man sentenced to 12 years in fatal shooting

A 32-year-old Baltimore man convicted of manslaughter has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Circuit Judge John N. Prevas sentenced Roosevelt Preston Sydnor on Friday in the Dec. 9 shooting death of Anthony Jackson, 32, State's Attorney Patricia C. Jessamy announced.

Sydnor of the 1600 block of Holbrook St. took a handgun from Jackson during a robbery and shot him several times as the victim tried to escape. In May, a jury convicted Sydnor of manslaughter and use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime.

Police seek help identifying victim in Pimlico killing

Police said yesterday they had not identified a man who was fatally shot Saturday in Northwest Baltimore.

The victim, between ages 20 and 30, was found by officers about 1: 20 a.m. in the 3500 block of W. Belvedere Ave. in Pimlico. He had been shot at least once. Police said the man carried no identification and was not recognized by bystanders.

Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide squad at 410-396-2100.

Community service program open to people 55 and older

TOWSON -- The county Department of Aging is seeking county residents age 55 or older who are interested in working 20 hours a week in a federally funded community service program.

The pay will be $5.15 an hour. Applicants must meet income and eligibility guidelines.
