Named All-Star coaches: Red Sox's Jimy Williams and Jim Rice; Yankees' Jose Cardenal, Chris Chambliss, Tony Cloninger, Willie Randolph, Mel Stottlemyre and Don Zimmer; and White Sox's Jerry Manuel.

NL: Named All-Star coaches: Reds' Jack McKeon; Cubs' Jim Riggleman; Padres' Greg Booker, Tim Flannery, Rob Picciolo, Merv Rettenmund and Mark Merila.

Braves: Activated SS Walt Weiss. Optioned IF Mark DeRosa to Triple-A Richmond.

Expos: Outrighted P Mel Rojas to Triple-A Ottawa.

Tigers: Placed P Masao Kida (back strain) on 15-day DL. Recalled P Willis Roberts from Triple-A Toledo.

Mystics (WNBA): Waived C Jennifer Whittle. Signed F-C Valerie Still.

College

Penn State: Jerry Sandusky retired after 31 seasons as defensive coordinator, effective after 1999 season.

Football

49ers: Signed QB Steve Stenstrom to $1.2 million, two-year contract.

Jets: Signed G David Loverne.

Hockey

Mighty Ducks: Re-signed C-LW Ted Donato and RW Jeff Nielsen.

Panthers: Cut D Terry Carkner, RW Dino Ciccarelli and LW-C Kirk Muller. Made qualifying offers to D Bret Hedican, D John Jakopin, C Ryan Johnson, C Viktor Kozlov, D Filip Kuba, D Jaroslav Spacek, D Jeff Ware and LW-C Chris Wells.
