Key High clinic provides weight training expertise

LEO TOTTEN IS ONE enthusiastic person.

His passion: weight training. His mission: to get you in shape, regardless of your age, shape or condition.

Totten, a weight training coach for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team and a competitor in weightlifting until recently, is athletic director at Francis Scott Key High School.

He and Key football coaches Mike Coons and Carroll Seiler conduct a summer weight training clinic in the well-equipped weight room at Key.

The clinic is sponsored by Union Bridge Area Recreation Council, and more than 150 attend the sessions to lift, grunt and groan to good health.

Though originally designed for high school athletes who need to stay in shape year-round, the clinic is open to anyone in the community.

Totten sees parent-child combinations, children as young as 8 and adults in their middle years.

He, Seiler and Coons structure programs to fit the individual.

"We adapt their training programs to their unique needs," said Totten. "You can't just come in here and wing it."

Totten notes the benefits of weight training: improved muscle tone, increased muscle mass and decreased body fat, and aerobic conditioning. But, as a teacher, he most appreciates the increased self-confidence and self-esteem that are the byproducts of fitness training.

"Kids can excel at their own pace and notice that, before long, they're making progress. What it does for the self-esteem is hard to measure, but it's definitely there," he said. "And the discipline, dedication and motivation of fitness training carries over to their schoolwork, and that's what we like."

The 3,000-square-foot weight room at Key has equipment ranging from free weights, platforms, benches, and power racks to stationary bikes, fitness machines, and the medicine balls we remember lugging around the schoolyard.

The room is adjacent to the track, so jogging, running and stretching are easily combined with weight training.

Clinic hours are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Cost is $30 for the session, which runs through mid-August.

Marking the millennium

Begin the millennium celebration early in Taneytown with the purchase of commemorative books.

Taneytown Chamber of Commerce is publishing a book including town businesses, with locations, phone numbers and descriptions, and a brief history of Taneytown, including events since 1976.

"This project has been a community effort," said Sue Reifsnider, who chaired the project.

"The book is a complete listing of businesses in town, plus we really wanted to showcase the town's history," she said. "Anyone moving into Taneytown will want to purchase this book."

Reifsnider has been working on the project for three months, with help from committee members George Naylor, Henry Alexander, Virginia Sanders, Charlie and Helen Null, and the Taneytown community.

"Everyone has helped," she said.

Caring and Sharing Ministries is putting together a millennium book of recipes from church suppers and covered-dish dinners.

Both books will be ready for sale at Celebrate Taneytown Day, held Aug. 28.

Preserve those berries

I had a lovely chat this morning with neighbor Anna Marie Devilbiss, who shared a secret for freezing the fresh raspberries she and her husband, Floyd, just picked: Put them in unbaked pie shells, then into the freezer.

When you're hungry for a berry pie, take it out of the freezer and bake.

Summer travel

The lines at the AAA office are long, highways are congested on a weekday morning and all your favorite books on audiotape are checked out of the library.

It must be summer, when people take to the road.
