Kinder park outings

The Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Department has scheduled fun outings this month at Kinder Farm Park to help satisfy your nature-loving appetite.

A good way to become familiar with the park is to take the orientation tour at 10 a.m. July 10.

Next comes an unusual poison ivy hike at 1 p.m. July 11. This is followed by a reptile walk at 10 a.m. July 15 and a whistle pig (you perhaps call them groundhogs or woodchucks) walk at 1 p.m. July 17.

A butterfly walk takes place at 11 a.m. July 24; a worm walk at 1 p.m. July 25; a night hike at 9 p.m. July 28 (no pets and children for this one); and a raccoon walk at 11 a.m. July 31.

You'll also meet the park's newest rangers, Carla Boggess, David Farner and Brian Campbell.

Tours begin at the park office. Signs in the park will direct you.

Spring fair success

Beth Frank, vice president of Benfield Elementary School's PTA and chairwoman of the school's annual spring fair, reports that this year's fair earned $11,500.

"The generosity of parents and friends contributed to an overwhelmingly successful fair," said Frank.

Proceeds came from ticket sales, a silent auction, snowballs and other tasty treats, plus 15 game booths that kept the youngsters busy.

Benfield's dynamic musical duo, 10-year-olds Allie Greif and Greg Zigler -- who had previously brought down the house with their trumpet duet at the spring concert -- were featured in the fifth-grade graduation ceremony June 14 when they played a stirring descant to "America the Beautiful," while their classmates sang the lyrics.

Bill Yakaitis directs the school band, and Marla Mooney directs the chorus.

According to the reaction of the new middle-schoolers, their favorite part of the ceremony was a video tracing their final year in elementary school, a visual scrapbook of the antics of every kid in the class.

Hospice support groups

Hospice of the Chesapeake's Spiritual and Bereavement Care Center in Millersville offers a wide variety of professionally run support groups for those grieving the loss of a loved one.
