Gospel artists fill church stages

Up-and-coming, famous to perform this summer

Fred Hammond, who is performing at a youth seminar in Upper Marlboro next week, is not the only artist coming to the area with praise. Here is the summer line up for other gospel concerts.

July 18: Ayeesha, an up-and-coming star of gospel is headlining a concert that caps a youth conference at Jericho City of Praise. Joining her will be the Kenoly Brothers, who recently released "All the Way," and the Winans, Phase II, whose first compact disc "We Got Next" is to be released in August. The concert is free at Jericho City of Praise, 8501 Spectrum Drive, Landover. Information: 301-333-0500.

July 24: the Gospel Spectacular `99 at Riverdale Baptist Church will feature Paul Lewis and the Gospel Spectacular Mass Choir and Orchestra. Lewis, who is classically trained, uses traditional, hip hop, jazz, calypso, and big band sound to carry his gospel message. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and is free, but a love offering will be collected. Riverdale Baptist Church is at 1177 Largo Road, Upper Marlboro. July 31: Several traditional artists and local choirs will perform at the Gospel Song Service at Riverdale Baptist Church. A dozen artists and choirs are scheduled to appear, including Paul Porter and The Christianaires and Willie Neal Johnson and the Gospel Keynotes, a stomping, clapping male chorus sound. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $20 at the door ($13 at the door for seniors). Children age 12 and under can attend free. Doors open at 3 p.m., and the concert starts at 4 p.m. Riverdale Baptist Church is at 1177 Largo Road, Upper Marlboro. Transportation is available for seniors. Information: 703-583-8567.

Aug. 6: the "First Lady of Gospel" Shirley Caesar will hold a concert at Jericho City of Praise. She learned her craft in the churches of Durham, N.C. The concert is free at Jericho City of Praise, 8501 Spectrum Drive, Landover. Information: 301-333-0500.

Sept. 3: Grammy Award winner Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir take the stage at Jericho with a popular contemporary sound. Their concert is free at Jericho City of Praise, 8501 Spectrum Drive, Landover. Information: 301-333-0500.

Also in September, a concert series will be presented at Hope Christian Church in Beltsville. Hope Christian Church worships in High Point High School, 3601 Powder Mill Road, Beltsville. Information: 800-327-2724.
