Driver indicted in passengers' crash deaths

June 23, 1999

A Howard County grand jury has indicted a New York man on charges of vehicular homicide in an October accident on Interstate 95 that left two passengers in his car dead.

Jose Adonay Umanzor, 21, has been charged with two counts of homicide by motor vehicle and several other charges in the deaths of Jose A. Benitez, 24, of Hyattsville and Martha E. Quintanilla, 17, of Takoma Park.

Umanzor was driving his 1985 Pontiac Grand Am south on I-95 about 6 a.m. Oct. 11 when he crashed into a 1994 Ford Bronco that had been abandoned in the southbound median, police said.

Benitez and Quintanilla were found dead at the scene, police said.

Umanzor later tested above the legal limit for alcohol consumption, police said.

He is living with his mother in New York, said Tfc. Lee Pruitt of the Waterloo Barracks.

The grand jury indicted Umanzor on Thursday, and the indictment was signed by a judge yesterday.
