Red Sox update

The Red Sox, 40-29, have a lock on the American League wild card and enter after extending the Texas Rangers' recent offensive woes. Last year's strong pitching has carried into this season as they lead the league in ERA, strikeouts and shutouts while allowing the AL's second-fewest walks. Hopeful of reaching .500 by the All-Star break, the 31-37 Orioles catch a significant break, throwing their three hottest starters while missing Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez. Portugal only recently escaped bullpen duty. Saberhagen (lacerated foot) comes off the disabled list tomorrow while rookie Cho matches up against Mussina on Thursday. Closer Tom Gordon (elbow strain, disabled list) will miss the series. His record run of 54 consecutive saves ended June 5 against the Atlanta Braves, and he blew his subsequent chance June 11 before being shut down. Derek Lowe and knuckleballer Tim Wakefield now split Gordon's duties. Largely because of Martinez, the Red Sox's rotation is 30-20 with 335 strikeouts in 393 innings pitched. The Red Sox have out-homered only the White Sox and Twins, yet have allowed their opponents fewer homers than themselves. Nomar Garciaparra is again hot, going 18-for-32 during his active nine-game hitting streak. The Red Sox rank 11th in the league in runs scored despite ranking sixth in slugging percentage. They boast the league's second-best home record (24-13) but are .500 (16-16) on the road. (Red Sox statistics, 7C)
