State trust to accept applications this week

The Maryland Pre-Paid College Trust will accept applications postmarked this week, extending its June 10 deadline to sign up for the college savings program.

Ellen Markowitz, program administrator of the trust, said the program received so many requests for information in the days leading to Thursday's deadline that it decided on the extension.

"We did stop sending out information and applications as of June 10," Markowitz said yesterday. "But we want to give people a chance to look at that information, so we will accept applications postmarked through this Friday."

Markowitz said the number of applications received during the current enrollment period is approaching 2,000.

"We had 300 come in the mail on Friday and have not had a chance to count" yesterday's," she said.

The prepaid trust, authorized by the General Assembly last year, offers parents options for paying in advance for their children's college education. When the child reaches college age, the trust pays tuition and fees at a Maryland public college or an equal amount to any other school.

Trust administrators were disappointed that only 1,000 people signed up for the program in its initial enrollment period last year and are hoping to get close to 10,000 in this and a fall sign-up.
