An Anne Arundel man who taught math this school year at Old Court Middle School in Baltimore County was charged with possessing child pornography and sending it over the Internet, state police said yesterday.

Gary Lee Russell, 52, of the 700 block of Fairview Ave. in Annapolis was charged in a criminal summons, said state police 1st Sgt. Laura Lu Herman.

Russell, who joined the middle school faculty in October, resigned at the end of the school year for undisclosed reasons, said Charles A. Herndon, Baltimore County school system spokesman. The resignation is effective at the end of this month.

Herman said the charges stemmed from an investigation that started after Internet provider America Online notified state police that one of its subscribers distributed two files depicting images of child pornography. Both images involved a prepubescent girl being sexually intimate with an adult male, according to charging documents.

State police seized Russell's personal computer this month, and the investigation is continuing, Herman said.

"We're still completing a forensic investigation on the computer. The investigators have the ability and the knowledge to dissect the computer to trace the paths of communication that the individual has used. They can recover a lot of the material that was used in the transmissions," she said.
