Royals update

The Royals (26-34) have lost 14 of their past 18 games. They are 14-16 on the road, having dropped seven of their last eight. Their bullpen has blown 13 saves in 22 tries. But the attack has some punch. In their last four wins, they've scored 11, 11, 17 and 10 runs. Outfielder Jermaine Dye began yesterday leading the AL with nine outfield assists, two more than B. J. Surhoff. Appier has lost his last two starts. Fussell will face the Orioles for the first time since being swapped for Jeff Conine on April 1. The Royals took two of three from the Orioles in late April at Camden Yards. Appier lost the first game, allowing six runs and seven hits in four innings. Rosado got the win in the next game, allowing only a homer by Harold Baines in seven innings. Erickson absorbed a 15-5 loss in the rubber game, permitting six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. That game marked the end of the Heathcliff Slocumb era in Baltimore. The reliever gave up seven runs in the ninth and was released the next day.
