For the second year in a row at the National Prep Tennis Team Championship, DeMatha goes into its final match with a spotless record.

"Yeah, and look what good it did us last year," said coach George Thayer on the eve of his team's showdown with equally unbeaten McDonogh (4-0) this morning at 9.

"We were 4-0 and Dwight School of New York was 3-1, but it beat us for the title. I have to tell you, though, it was the best schoolboy match I've ever been in. Quite a few people watched and they really got into it," said Thayer.

McDonogh set up the finale by squeezing past Western Reserve, 4-2, in a three-hour-plus match on the blazing asphalt courts of McDonogh that registered temperatures over the 100-degree mark.

Earlier, McDonogh defeated Hill School, 4-0, while DeMatha was having a surprisingly easy time in defeating Deerfield, 4-1, then disposing of Hill, 4-1.

In its match against Western Reserve, McDonogh put itself in a box early by losing the point for doubles. The Eagles lost another point when substitute John Sarpatwari was felled by cramps, meaning they had to win four of the five remaining singles matches.

Zach Myers, Chris Chiu, Eric Ottenheimer and Tom Hallock did just that, thus preserving the host team's shot at its first title in the four-year history of the event.
