Mark Thomas Mercer, 41 Northrop Grumman manager

Mark Thomas Mercer, a manager at Northrop Grumman, the defense contractor in Linthicum, died Friday of a brain tumor at home in Millersville. He was 41.

Before working for Northrop Grumman, Mr. Mercer was a program manager for Westinghouse Electric Corp., also in Linthicum.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Severna Park, Mr. Mercer graduated from Severna Park High School in 1976. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Delaware in 1980 and a master's degree in administrative science from the Johns Hopkins University in 1987.

An avid reader, traveler and sailor, Mr. Mercer loved sports and served as assistant coach for the Severna Park Green Hornets basketball, lacrosse and soccer teams.

He also taught religion at St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church in Severn.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Bernadette Church, 801 Stevenson Road.

He is survived by his wife, the former Julie Blair; two sons, Daniel Mercer and Patrick Mercer, and a daughter, Kara Mercer, all of Millersville; his parents, George and Anne Marie Mercer of Severna Park; two brothers, Paul Mercer of Millersville and Thomas Mercer of Maple Rapids, Mich.; and a sister, Mary Lynn Coleman of Arnold.
