Obese man lifted from room by crane, taken to hospital

ESSEX -- A man whose obesity had made him a prisoner in his second-floor bedroom was freed yesterday and taken to a hospital for tests and observation, fire officials said.

Fifty firefighters, a crane truck and a sling were used to move the man, estimated to weigh between 680 and 800 pounds, to Franklin Square Hospital Center, said Baltimore County Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Hubbard. The man's identity was not released by fire officials.

"We had to remove a partition wall between the living room and his bedroom, where he was lying on the floor on a mattress," Hubbard said. The operation took 5 1/2 hours, he said.
