Phillies update

Interleague play enters its third season with the Orioles facing their designated NL East "rival" for the first part of a delayed home-and-home matchup. The Phillies are in third, 5 1/2 games behind division-leading Atlanta, after last night's 7-4 loss to San Francisco. The Orioles will miss ace Curt Schilling, who was named NL Pitcher for the Month after going 5-1 with a 2.42 ERA in six starts. His run included five complete games, more than any other team in the majors. The Phillies have benefited from a solid bullpen featuring Wayne Gomes, Mike Grace, Yorkis Perez and Jim Poole. Catcher Mike Lieberthal is among the NL's top 10 in batting average and has 26 RBIs in his last 25 games. The Phillies have been tough on left-handed pitching, which probably won't do them much good this series. The Phillies are 14-11 on the road.
