Player of the Year

Katie Mullinix, North Carroll, senior, pitcher: The county's best all-around player, Mullinix led the Panthers to the Class 3A state title game with her arm and her bat. As a pitcher, she was 7-3 with a 1.18 ERA and 49 strikeouts against just 14 walks. Take away the title game, and her ERA was 0.66. She overpowered opposing hitters with her blazing fastball and rarely strayed out of the strike zone. She also sparked an offense that averaged nearly seven runs a game, batting .338 with three doubles, six triples, two home runs, 24 RBIs and 24 runs scored. She stole six bases, as well. Her efforts helped North Carroll, winners of 11 straight at one point, to its third state championship appearance in five years.

Coach of the Year

Joe Linthicum, Francis Scott Key: Linthicum engineered one of the greatest turnarounds in county history, leading the Eagles, winners of just nine games over the past two years, to a 14-5 mark and second place in the intensely competitive Monocacy Valley Athletic League. Despite an early exit from the state playoffs, the team set a school record for wins, knocking off such top teams as Middletown and Catoctin along the way. Led by its pitching and senior leadership, Key regrouped after a rough start to post six straight wins and turn its season around. "I've been down below. I know what it's like to be on the lower end of the scale," Linthicum said late in the season. "Now, it feels good to be on top."

The team

Meredith Carter, Francis Scott Key, sophomore, pitcher: Carter dominated opposing hitters, going 7-1 with a 0.94 ERA and striking out 72 against just 12 walks in 59 1/3 innings. She also pitched in at the plate, scoring 15 runs and driving in eight.

Lisa Tunney, North Carroll, junior, pitcher: Tunney, in her first varsity season, showed tremendous improvement, pitching to a 9-0 record with a 0.46 ERA and 37 strikeouts. The junior allowed four runs and 27 hits all season, helping the Panthers reach the Class 3A state title game.

Meagan Tracey, Francis Scott Key, senior, catcher: The offensive leader of the vastly improved Eagles, Tracey hit a team-best .346 with three doubles, two triples and 20 RBIs. It was her ability to handle Key's young pitchers, however, that truly set her apart from the crowd.

Trish Brown, North Carroll, sophomore, infielder: A key component in North Carroll's drive to the state championship game, the sophomore hit .347 with five doubles and nine RBIs, and also contributed with solid defense at second base.

Sara Clark, North Carroll, senior, infielder: Batting cleanup for the Panthers, the senior led her team in hitting with a .385 average and had four doubles, a triple and 15 RBIs. She also scored 12 runs and played well defensively at first base.
