Giants: Recalled P Julian Tavarez from rehabilitation assignment and reinstated him to active roster. Optioned P Joe Nathan to Triple-A Fresno.

Indians: Signed OF J. J. Sherrill, 23rd-round pick in 1998 draft.

Marlins: Activated former Orioles P Archie Corbin, who had been on 15-day DL with sore right elbow, then returned him to DL after he pulled rib muscle on first pitch in relief appearance last night.

Red Sox: Activated P Bret Saberhagen off 15-day DL. Optioned P Tim Harikkala to Triple-A Pawtucket. Optioned P Danny Haas to Single-A Sarasota.

Twins: Placed C Terry Steinbach on 15-day DL. Recalled C A. J. Pierzynski from Triple-A Salt Lake.

South Atlantic League: Named Hagerstown SS Jorge Nunez Player of the Week.

Basketball

Utah (WNBA): Released C Ellen Bayer, G Crystal Carpenter, G Kari Gallup and G Marlene Stollings.

Cleveland State: Named Frank Dobbs men's assistant basketball coach.

Findlay: Announced retirement of football coach Dick Strahm.

Gettysburg: A Jamie Bateman (Hereford) was named to STX/USILA All-America Lacrosse Division III honorable mention.

Long Island U.: Men's assistant basketball coach Paul Harrison resigned to take same position at College of Charleston.

Towson: 2B Jason Rummel (Walkersville) was named to GTE All-America baseball third team.

Villa Julie: Signed point guard Terrell Dantzler (Southwestern).

Canucks: Signed C Harold Druken. Acquired rights to RW-C Pat Kavanagh from Flyers for sixth-round pick in 1999 draft and signed him.

Flames: Signed D Chris St. Croix.

Kings: Signed LW David Hymovitz to two-year contract and RW Marko Tuomainen to one-year contract.

Panthers: Signed RW Ivan Novoseltsev to three-year contract, just beating deadline to keep him from re-entering NHL draft.

Olympics

SLOC: Named Fraser Bullock chief financial officer, in addition to his current duties as executive VP and chief operating officer. Promoted Gordon Crabtree to managing director of finance.

Soccer

New York-New Jersey (MLS): Acquired F Eric Wynalda from San Jose to complete previous trade and M Welton from Los Angeles for M Ron Myers. Traded Wynalda, Welton and D Arley Palacios to Miami for future considerations.
