Chamber speaker to explore future of farming

David Greene, county extension director and agent in agricultural science, will be the speaker at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce's general membership luncheon at noon June 10 at the Comfort Inn in Westminster.

He will discuss "Future of Farming in Carroll County" -- changes over the past decade and changes to come.

Cost is $15 and reservations are required by Friday.

The chamber's membership breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. June 29 at Wilhelm Ltd. Caterers on Route 140, Westminster. The 1999 recipients of the Charles D. Schaffer Scholarship Foundation award will tell the group of their plans for the future.

Cost is $10 and reservations are required by June 25.

Resource Center offers help in finding a job

The Carroll County Business & Employment Resource Center offers workshops and programs to help individuals who may be seeking a job or looking for a new career.

Programs include:

Introduction to the Internet: 9 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m. June 8 in Room 204. Job search techniques will be discussed.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: The psychological personality assessment test must be taken before the workshop on styles, from 9 a.m. to noon June 9.

Career Ability Placement Survey, Career Orientation Placement and Evaluation Survey, and Career Occupational Preference System workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 14. These surveys help determine your abilities, values, motivation and interests.

Job Club: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and June 17. Check the job posting board and local newspapers, use the center's resources and network with other job seekers.

Introduction to Personal Insurances: 9 a.m. to noon June 14 in Room 207. Learn what kind is best for you, where to go and whether you need a will.

Trends in Computer Occupations: Learn the meaning of such terms as certified network engineer and Microsoft certified systems engineer, and what training is needed for these jobs, from 10 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m. June 15.

Scholarships go to workers at Fairhaven, Copper Ridge

Episcopal Ministries to the Aging Inc. recently awarded scholarships to area students who are employed at Fairhaven and Copper Ridge in Sykesville.

Students employed at either facility working at least 12 hours a week are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship after one year and a $2,000 scholarship after two years.

Recipients of $1,000 scholarships from Fairhaven are: Christine M. Ackermann, Jamie K. Affayroux, Tiffany Dove, Craig R. Knoerlein, Andrea F. McGarry, Katie C. Upman, Nicole E. Vogel, Liberty High School; Robert G. Buck, Sarah Standifer, South Carroll High School.

Recipients of $2,000 scholarships from Fairhaven are: Stacey L. Campbell, Mark T. Onheiser Jr., Liberty; Timothy J. Kosyjana, Mount St. Joseph; Dustin R. Kreider, South Carroll.

Honored by Copper Ridge were: Jenna Scruggs, $1,000 scholarship, Liberty High; Eugene Chapman, $2,000 scholarship, Liberty High.

Fairhaven is a continuing care community and Copper Ridge is a facility for those suffering from dementia.

Callahan is named sales office manager

The Hampstead office of O'Conor, Piper & Flynn ERA Realtors has named Sharon Callahan as sales office manager.

She obtained her real estate license in 1984 and has been with OPF her entire career. She belongs to the county, state and national associations of Realtors.

Classic Mortgage links with F&M, Home Federal

Farmers & Mechanics National Bank and Home Federal Savings Bank have expanded and enhanced their mortgage program with the addition of Classic Mortgage.

Classic will now serve as the mortgage arm of both banks.

A full range of mortgage products are available at F&M and Home Federal in Carroll, Frederick, Montgomery, Howard and Baltimore counties and Adams County, Pa.

Chris Applegate is managing director for Classic Mortgage. Senior vice president of operations is Julie Donat and vice president of production is Ron Antrim.

Image Mailing Services buys Westminster building

Image Mailing Services Group Inc. has purchased a new facility in Westminster to help consolidate operations, expand services and add employees.

The direct mail company has bought a 30,000-square-foot warehouse in the Air Business Center for production and offices, bringing four sites under one roof. IMSG is a full-service company offering a range of data processing and mailing services.

The company has 26 full-time and 10 part-time employees, with plans to expand its staff during the next year.
