City's team in new IBL is named BayRunners

Baltimore's franchise in the new International Basketball League will be called the BayRunners, league president Greg Smith said last night.

The name was the most popular among more than 300 entries in a contest that ran May 12-19.

The BayRunners begin play in November at Baltimore Arena. For team and ticket information, call 410-332-HOOP (4667).

Mystics: Chamique Holdsclaw, the WNBA's first draft choice, got 14 points and 13 rebounds to help Washington beat the Utah Starzz, 76-71, in her first professional exhibition game. Proclaimed the female Michael Jordan -- and playing in a triangle offense made popular by the retired superstar -- she was 5-for-11 from the field in 29 minutes. Her every touch of the ball brought cheers from the crowd of 9,028, and her two air balls were quickly forgiven.
