Ruth S. Carman, 78, church secretary, volunteer

Ruth S. Carman, retired secretary at Towson Presbyterian Church and a volunteer, died Tuesday of cancer at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Towson. She was 78.

Mrs. Carman was secretary at Towson Presbyterian from 1976 to 1997. Earlier, she did secretarial work elsewhere, including at Bendix-Frieze on East Joppa Road during World War II.

In retirement, she was a volunteer at the Spiritual Support Center at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and a volunteer reader at Deer Park Elementary School.

Earlier, she was a volunteer with Meals On Wheels of Central Maryland.

The former Ruth Smith, a lifelong Towson resident, was a 1938 graduate of Towson High School and attended the Bard Avon Finishing School.

In 1951, she married O. Wilton Carman, who died some years ago.

She was a congregant of Towson Presbyterian and choir member there and belonged to the Washington Garden Club.

Plans for a memorial service were incomplete.

She is survived by a sister, Helen Smith Bauer of Carney; three nephews; and three grandnephews.
