Mark Evenson from Ellicott City and Joey Chuasiriporn from Timonium were among nine players advancing out of yesterday's U.S. Open local qualifying round at Eagle's Nest.

Evenson, an assistant pro at the Suburban Club, shot 3-under-par 69, and Chuasiriporn, an amateur from Hunt Valley Golf Club, shot a 2-under 70. The medal was shared by Eric Egloff of Rockville and Bryan Jackson of Portsmouth, Va., who both shot 68s.

Just making the 7: 39 a.m. tee time was an accomplishment for Chuasiriporn. He graduated from Penn State on Saturday and attended sister Jenny's Duke graduation Sunday. His was one of six 70s for four places, but when two failed to appear for the playoff, the four got in on the spot.

Evenson, who will be making his third sectional appearance, finished strongly, rolling in a birdie putt from off the green at 16, wedging close for birdie at 17, and getting up-and-down from a front bunker for par at 18.

In his first competitive round since the Maine Open last August, Egloff, 34, who works at Congressional CC, admitted to a shaky start. However, he collected four birdies on the back, including No. 17 with a 12-foot putt, and the 375-yard uphill 18th.

Jackson, 23, a recent James Madison graduate who had failed to advance in two previous Open attempts here, and, the only other amateur to qualify, made five birdies, including back-nine efforts at Nos. 12-13-15 from 10-15 feet.
