Winds make racing tough on regatta

Conditions challenge 208-boat, 16-class fleet

May 10, 1999|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

For Rolph Townshend of Annapolis, the final day of the GMC Yukon/Sailing World NOOD Regatta was a workout he will remember, winning one race and placing third in another to win the venerable Alberg 30 Class.

"We had a ball," said Townshend, 69, whose crew is made up of fellow retirees.

Puffy 6- to 14-knot winds made spinnaker sets and takedowns tough for Townshend and his crew, and they acknowledged being tired, bruised and mentally beat when they returned to the Annapolis Yacht Club.

Yesterday's racing was challenging for each of the 208 boats in 16 one-design fleets, which had to deal with winds shifting out of the northwest and funneling out of the Severn and South rivers.

Among the newer one-design classes:

Roxanne, with Annapolis sailmaker Terry Hutchinson aboard as tactician, won the 1D35 class. Canvasback, sailed by Douglas Croker III of Oxford, finished second. George Collins, who spearheaded the Chessie Racing program in the recent Whitbread race, finished fourth in Moxie.

Rick Born and his crew from Baltimore sailed Grayling to victory in the J/35 fleet with second and first finishes on the final day to overtake Aunt Jean.

The best performance in the regatta was in the S2 class, where Mike Elliott and his crew from Linden, Mich., won five of the six races it sailed.
