Outward Bound

MARYLAND SCENE

May 09, 1999|By Sloane Brown

It was a double challenge at Baltimore on Belay!, the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound's annual fund-raiser. First, participants took on such Outward Bound-type challenges as wall climbing and high-wire walking at Rash Field. Then, it was time to take in dinner, indoors at the Rusty Scupper restaurant.

Among the 150 folks relishing this evening of "roughing it": David Starnes, director of Mid-Atlantic Outward Bound; Joan Welsh, president of the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School; Sally Michel, Jim Garrett, Betsy Nelson and Dick Frisch, Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound board members; Jennifer Pelton, event coordinator; Shasanta Abdullah, Outward Bound instructor; Derrick Southard, president of Milestone Associates Inc.; and two recent graduates of the Baltimore Outward Bound program, 11-year-old Brittany Kirk and 13-year-old Cierra Tyler from Canton Middle School.

Proceeds from the $30,000 raised by the event will go toward youth scholarship programs for Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound.
