Severn surprises No. 2 Saints, 11-10

April 30, 1999|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Marshall Feldman, Drew Habeck and Jeff McFarland scored two goals apiece yesterday to lead No. 9-ranked Severn to an 11-10 upset win over No. 2 St. Mary's, denying the Saints a chance to clinch the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference Division II title.

The visiting Admirals (7-7, 1-3 league) trailed 5-1 early in the second quarter. But their defense tightened and allowed the offense the chance to get them back in the game, although the Saints (8-4, 2-1) led 7-5 at halftime.

Severn dominated possession in the third quarter but still trailed 8-7 entering the fourth. The Admirals scored four straight goals, including the eventual game-winner by defenseman Ronnie Staines, to go up 11-8.

Goalie Andrew Larkin (12 saves) had several big stops to stave off a late Saints rally.

Joe Thompson and Jeff Mullen led the Saints with two goals each. McFarland added two assists for Severn.
