Sheep festival in Howard Co. this weekend

The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival returns to the Howard County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Parking and admission are free.

Activities will include demonstrations and exhibits of the sheep and wool industry. A presentation on how the Leicester Longwools breed likely became extinct in this country more than 50 years ago will be given by Elaine Shirley of Westminster.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy will describe efforts to protect rare breeds. Demonstrations of dyeing, spinning, hand-painted yarn, rug braiding and felt making will be held.

The fairgrounds is on Route 144, south of Sykesville.
