Domestic violence that erupted during a court proceeding left a woman injured and a man charged with beating her, Baltimore County police said yesterday.

Court Master Jacqueline Dawson was ruling Thursday on how much child support would be paid to Tanya Smith, 30, of the 8200 block of Vosges Road in Baltimore County by Thomas Jerome Owens, 43, of Jamaica, N.Y., when Owens became angry.

Dawson told Owens to be quiet, police said, and Owens stood up and punched Smith, who was seated next to him at the trial table.

Smith fell to the floor, where Owens continued to hit her, witnesses and police said.

Dawson ran into another courtroom for help, and two sheriff's deputies ran back to the trial room, where they saw Owens kick Smith, who was unconscious and lying on the floor, in the head, police said.

Owens was charged with two counts of assault and released Thursday on bail. Smith was treated at Sinai Hospital and released yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
