Suspected arson razes Gambrills barn

A fire destroyed a privately owned barn next to the U.S. Naval Academy's dairy farm yesterday an Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman said.

Lt. Robert Rose said the contents of the barn also were destroyed, The loss was estimated at $150,000.

"It was a total loss," he aid.

Rose said charges were pending against a youth suspected of a setting the fire.

The youth entered the barn, on Claffy Avenue in Gambrills, about 3 p.m. and used a cigarette lighter to set fire to hay, quickly engulfing the building, Rose said.

Rose said the barn -- with concrete sides and a metal roof -- contained farm equipment and a truck.

The roof collapsed at the height of the blaze, Rose said, preventing firefighters from 14 county career and volunteer fire stations, including the Navel Academy, from entering the barn.

Rose said the fire was brought under control about 4 p.m. Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours, putting out hotspots and razing what was left of the barn.

He said the youth, who was not injured, was interviewed by authorities.
