After lengthy negotiations, the Howard County school system and Merriweather Post Pavilion settled yesterday on graduation dates for the district's high schools.

From June 1 to 3, seniors at eight of the county's 10 high schools will graduate at the Columbia pavilion.

Booking conflicts disrupted the usually simple graduation talks that Merriweather Post and county schools have conducted since 1989.

"In 11 seasons, we have only had to say no to the schools' requests for graduation dates twice," Merriweather general manager Jean Parker said.

On June 4, instead of caps and gowns the pavilion will be filled with trucks and sound systems as it prepares for the two-day Capital Jazz Fest opening there the next day.

FOR THE RECORD - An article Friday in the Howard County section of The Sun reported that students made the decision to move Howard High School's graduation exercises from Merriweather Post Pavilion to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In fact, Howard High's administration decided on the UMBC site, saying its space accommodated more people.
The Sun regrets the error.

Not willing to sacrifice the June 4 date, Howard High seniors decided to abandon the traditional site and will graduate at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County that day.

Although Merriweather was unable to meet that school's needs, for the most part the partnership between the for-profit corporation and Howard County schools has proved beneficial for both.

"Merriweather Post is in the business of putting on concerts and bringing in revenues, and we understand that. Really, they have been very generous with their facilities," said Patti Caplan, spokeswoman for the county schools.

Glenelg High School traditionally holds its graduation in the school's auditorium and will again this year.
