Man fatally shot talking on pay telephone

Victim hit in chest, head on Windsor Mill Road

April 16, 1999|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A man was talking on a pay telephone in Northwest Baltimore last night when another man rode up on a bicycle about 7: 15 p.m. and shot him three times, police said.

Detective Gordon Carew said Keith McCallum, 29, was pronounced dead at 7: 44 p.m. at Liberty Medical Center.

Carew said McCallum was talking on a phone in the 3900 block of Windsor Mill Road, where several storefronts are vacant, when his assailant fired at least three shots from a large-caliber handgun, hitting McCallum in the chest, back and head.

Carew said a motorist saw McCallum lying on the pavement near the telephone and called police.

Police recovered several shell casings from what appeared to be a 9 mm handgun.

Family members told police that McCallum had two addresses -- one in West Baltimore and one on the east side -- and they were not sure which was his principal address.

No arrest had been made last night, and Carew said he knew of no motive for the slaying.
