Teacher publishes article on middle school readers

Oklahoma Road Middle School teacher Rita Karr recently shared her experiences using young adult literature in the classroom in an article "Middle School Readers: Common Views, Different Worlds."

The article was written for the winter 1999 issue of The ALAN Review. She serves on the editorial review board and board of directors for ALAN (Assembly of Literature for Adolescents of the National Council of Teachers of English).

Karr is an eighth-grade English, writing and language arts teacher.

Fires

Sykesville: Firefighters responded at 5: 26 p.m. Tuesday to a gas line struck in the 6300 block of Bonnie Brae Road. Units were out 40 minutes.

Sykesville: Firefighters from Sykesville and Winfield responded at 4: 07 p.m. Tuesday to an auto fire on Route 97 at the Howard County line. Units were out 47 minutes.

Sykesville: Firefighters responded at 5: 19 a.m. Tuesday to a fire alarm in the 900 block of Johnsville Road. Units were out 23 minutes.
