Indians: Placed P Ricardo Rincon on the 15-day DL, retroactive to April 11, with soreness and swelling in his left elbow; purchased the contract of P Mark Langston from Triple-A Buffalo.

Marlins: Placed P Alex Fernandez on the 15-day DL because of inflammation in his pitching shoulder.

Mets: Recalled P Rigo Beltran and OF Terrence Long from Triple-A Norfolk.

Tigers: Announced they will recall P Jeff Weaver from Double-A Jacksonville today.

Twins: Named Jim Denn vice president of sales and Patrick Klinger director of marketing.


NBA: Suspended Hawks G Anthony Johnson one game and fined him $5,000 for throwing a flagrant elbow in a game April 10; fined Hawks C Dikembe Mutombo $7,500 for throwing an elbow in a game April 9.

Nets: Signed F David Vaughn to a 10-day contract.


ACC: Named Maryland P Tom Curtiss baseball pitcher of the week.

Birmingham-Southern: Announced the formation of a women's basketball team beginning with the 2000 season.

East Tennessee State: Agreed to a three-year contract extension with women's basketball coach Karen Kemp.

Kent: Signed men's basketball coach Gary Waters to a five-year contract extension.

South Carolina-Aiken: Announced that baseball coach Tony Casas will not return after the 1999 season.

Texas: Named Rob Lanier assistant basketball coach.


Bears: Retained DT Paul Grasmanis by signing him to a one-year contract.

Broncos: Signed unrestricted DE Carl Reeves, who had been with Bears.

Buccaneers: Hired Wendell Avery as an offensive assistant.

Panthers: Signed Cowboys restricted free-agent WR Patrick Jeffers to an offer sheet.

Calgary Stampeders (CFL): Signed DE Marc Pilon.


Panthers: Recalled D John Jakopin and G Todd McDonald from AHL New Haven. Reassigned D Peter Ratchuk and D Jeff Ware to New Haven.

Rangers: Agreed to terms with C Mike York and D Kim Johnsson.

Syracuse Crunch (AHL): Released LW Marcus Gustafsson and Bobby Stewart.
