One man dies, another hurt in Marriottsville collision

A Marriottsville man died and a Woodstock man was injured in a head-on collision Sunday evening on Marriottsville Road in Carroll County, near the Baltimore County line, according to Maryland State Police at the Westminster barracks.

A 1996 Chevrolet driven by Robert George McCray Jr., 51, crossed the center line on Marriottsville Road and hit a 1989 Chevrolet truck head-on about 5: 30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

McCray was pronounced dead at Northwest Hospital Center, police said, and the driver of the truck, Charles Glenn Boyce, 62, was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He was in fair condition yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, police said.

Six middle school pupils compete in oratory contest

Six Oklahoma Road Middle School pupils recently competed in the Freedom District Optimist oratory contest.

The pupils were Amanda Beyer, Anthony Cimino, Kelly Fisk, Anna Novack, Adam Priest and Tracy Taylor.

The topic was "Optimism in My Life."

Anthony Cimino won a $100 savings bond and delivered his speech in the regional competition. He also competed in the state contest Saturday.


Sykesville: Firefighters responded at 12: 51 p.m. Saturday to a woods fire in the 7600 block of Schoolhouse Road. Units were out 20 minutes.

Sykesville: Firefighters from Sykesville, Gamber and Winfield responded at 6: 09 p.m. Friday to a report of smoke in a house in the 1000 block of Grandview Drive. Units were out 20 minutes.
