Firefighters control Columbia brush blaze

April 07, 1999

A 10-acre brush fire engulfed a field at Columbia's Smith Farm on Saturday, burning for six hours before Howard County Fire and Rescue officials could extinguish it.

Firefighters received a call from neighbors at 12: 25 p.m. of a small fire, said Capt. David Carroll, a department spokesman.

But "the wind picked up and the fire spread quickly," Carroll said.

A dozen personnel responded to the blaze, which was under control by 6: 40 p.m.
