Devil Rays update

In a season filled with potholes, it didn't get much deeper for the Orioles than when they were swept here by the Devil Rays in a four-game series May 15-18. Alvarez won the opener, 4-1, and the Orioles never recovered -- in the series or the season. The losses dropped them to 20-23, and the club proceeded to lose its next four games as well, including a three-game sweep in New York. Tampa Bay's pitching was more than respectable last season, but it couldn't compensate for an offense that produced 94 fewer runs than any other AL team. The free-agent signing of Jose Canseco should go a long way toward reducing that margin. Witt made the club as a nonroster invitee after going 9-9 with a 6.57 ERA with Texas and St. Louis last season. "They've improved quite a bit. They've got a good club," Mussina said. Former Orioles infielder Aaron Ledesma went on the disabled list with a dislocated left thumb.
