Scholar-athlete nominees sought for 17th awards

April 02, 1999|By Pat O'Malley | Pat O'Malley,SUN STAFF

If you are a student/athlete who resides in Anne Arundel County, plays at least one varsity sport and also does the job in the classroom, you are eligible to apply for the 17th All-Anne Arundel County Academic-Athletic Team.

Again The Sun is looking for the county's top 20 student-athletes. Ten male and 10 female students will be selected and receive plaques at a banquet at Michaels Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie.

Two overall winners -- one boy and one girl -- will receive $5,000 scholarships for the college of their choice.

The Sun and Times Mirror Co. are providing the scholarships.

Last year's winners were Old Mill's Kelly Voss and Archbishop Spalding's Jason King. Voss is a student at Belmont University and King is attending Davidson.

Applicants don't necessarily have to attend a county high school but must be a county resident.

Candidates need to read carefully and complete the application, which will be published occasionally, provide additional information and make the deadline of May 14. The application published in the paper must accompany your entry.

When applicants are close in performance, as they often are (nearly 100 apply each year), neatness, creativity, preparation, thoroughness and essay content can be determining factors for who is selected and who is not.

Questions should be directed to Pat O'Malley's 24-Hour Sportsline, 410-647-2499.
