Theismann just fooling about return

April 02, 1999|By Vito Stellino

In an era when old quarterbacks are making comebacks, Joe Theismann sounded as if he was ready to jump on the bandwagon yesterday.

Theismann, who turns 50 in September and hasn't played since Lawrence Taylor ended his career on Nov. 18, 1985, with a tackle that broke his leg on "Monday Night Football," told radio station 107.3 FM in Washington that he's completely healed, is in good shape, can still throw and is ready to make a comeback.

The former Washington Redskins quarterback sounded very serious, but he was making the statements on April 1. It was just an April Fool's joke dreamed up by the station and Theismann, ever the showman, went along with it.
