Junior forwards Joel Wertman and Nino Vanin combined for 44 points to power Johns Hopkins to a 78-52 rout of Washington College in the Centennial Conference championship game last night before a packed house of 1,500 in Chestertown, earning a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament.

The win helped the Blue Jays (21-5) erase memories of losing by two points to Muhlenberg in last year's championship.

"We came in as the underdog," said Wertman, noting that Hopkins had to beat Muhlenberg in Pennsylvania on Wednesday to advance to last night's game. "That just made it sweeter."

The field for the national tournament will be announced today and play begins Thursday.

Team defense was again the story for Hopkins, which has held opponents to a Divison III-best 57.2 points a game. Washington (17-10) was held to a 37.7 field-goal percentage and hit only two of 12 three-pointers.

Washington's star guard Greg Adams was limited to 12 points -- more than seven below his average. "They were up in our shorts the whole way," Adams said. "That's the way defense is supposed to be played."

Added Hopkins coach Bill Nelson: "That's been our identity for the whole year. Holding Washington to 28 percent [shooting] in the first half was pretty darn good because they're the most explosive scoring team in the conference."

Washington coach Tom Finnegan was impressed. "I thought we got outplayed," he said. "They were able to control the tempo and keep it a half-court game."
