Mount Airy asks Frederick County for help in building road extension

February 24, 1999

Mount Airy has asked Frederick County for help in building a one-mile extension of Rising Ridge Road to Route 27.

The $8 million project would divert traffic from Main Street and Route 144 at the western end of town and keep trucks off town streets as industrial development in Twin Ridge Professional Park increases.

"We could build this project in a year as long as there was a 90-10 split on funding," said Mayor Gerald R. Johnson.

The new intersection would probably need a traffic signal.

Johnson made the pitch to Frederick County commissioners during the annual meeting with the town and Carroll County officials on Monday.

Fire

Winfield: Firefighters from Winfield, Mount Airy, New Windsor and Libertytown, Frederick County, responded at 6: 41 a.m. Monday to a basement fire in the 4300 block of Ridge Road. Units were out one hour and 17 minutes.
