Purse: $2.8 million.

Winner's share: $504,000.

TV: USA (today, tomorrow, 4-6 p.m.); CBS (Saturday, Sunday, 3-6 p.m.).

Last year: Billy Mayfair won at Valencia Country Club, beating Tiger Woods with a 5-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff. Mayfair closed with a 4-under 67 to match Woods at 12-under 272.

Notes: Woods made his first tour appearance in the 1992 tournament. Then 16, he shot 72-75 to miss the cut. David Duval has two victories this year and nine in his last 30 starts. The Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship is next week in Carlsbad, Calif. The Tucson Open also is next week. Fred Couples won the 1990 and 1992 tournaments, and finished second in 1993, 1994 and 1996. Former UCLA star Corey Pavin won in 1994 and 1995. Tom Lehman is making his first start of the year. He had shoulder surgery Nov. 30.

LPGA Tour

Hawaiian Ladies Open

Site: Honolulu.

Schedule: Today-Saturday.

Course: Kapalei Country Club (6,100 yards, par 72).

Purse: $650,000.

Winner's share: $97,500.

TV: None.

Last year: Wendy Ward won with a par on the first hole of a playoff with Dana Dormann. Ward, the 1994 U.S. Amateur champion, closed with a 2-under 70 to match Dormann at 12-under 204.

Notes: Karrie Webb will defend her Australian Ladies Masters title next week on the Gold Coast. The Australian star won the Office Depot on Jan. 30 in West Palm Beach, Fla. Annika Sorenstam, the 1997 winner, is skipping the tournament.

Senior PGA Tour

GTE Classic

Site: Lutz, Fla.

Schedule: Tomorrow-Sunday.

Course: TPC of Tampa Bay (6,638 yards, par 71).

Purse: $1.2 million

Winner's share: $180,000.

TV: ESPN (tomorrow, 2-4 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday, 5: 30-7 p.m.).

Last year: Jim Albus won his sixth senior title, closing with a 1-under 70 for a one-stroke victory over Kermit Zarley, South Africa's Simon Hobday and Spain's Jose Maria Canizares. Albus had a 6-under 207.

Notes: With his back-to-back wins, newcomer Bruce Fleisher leads the money list with $330,000. Hale Irwin, the leader the last two years, is 38th with $26,533. He tied for 23rd in the season-opening MasterCard Championship and tied for 19th last week in Sarasota. Chi Chi Rodriguez tied for 31st last week in his first start since his Oct. 13 heart attack. He served as the player consultant on the TPC of Tampa Bay. Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench received a sponsor exemption. Rocky Thompson closed with a 10-under 61 in his 1994 victory. South Africa's Gary Player, 63, tied for 30th last week in the Australian Masters.
