A 14-year-old South Carroll girl was killed and three teen-agers were injured Sunday afternoon in an automobile accident near Eldersburg while on their way to a local karate school, state police at Westminster said.
The accident occurred about 1: 30 p.m. on a curve as the teens were southbound on Bartholow Road north of Linton Road, according to the police.
The 1994 Pontiac Grand Am fishtailed, struck a metal mailbox pole and rolled over several times -- ejecting two 14-year-old girls riding in the back seat.
Dead at the scene was Casey Lynn Carpenter of the 7400 block of Brangles Road, Marriottsville, a freshman at Liberty High School. The three other occupants of the car were airlifted to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
The driver, Robert Francis Keszler, 16, of the 7300 block of Norris Ave. in Sykesville, and the front-seat passenger, Timothy Joseph Valentine, 16, of Gaithersburg, were treated and released. Robert is a junior at Liberty; Timothy is a former classmate.
Lindsey Marie Gill, 14, of the 4700 block Bartholow Road, Eldersburg, remained in serious but stable condition yesterday at the trauma center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Her father, John Gill, said Lindsey and Casey were best friends. Just back from the hospital, he said Lindsey has a broken hip, but "they expect her to make a full recovery."
The teen-agers were going to a karate school where a friend of Casey was participating, he said.
"Tim was my daughter's friend and so was Robert, the driver -- they were all friends," he said.
Services for Casey will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldersburg, with burial in Lake View Memorial Park.
Casey was born in Westminster on July 26, 1984, the daughter of Sharon L. Wright Carpenter and M. Edward Carpenter Jr. Other survivors include two sisters, Cara M. and Courtney A. of the home address; her grandparents, Marion and Judy Carpenter of Marriottsville, Paul and Shirley Sipe of Abbottstown, Pa., and Michael and Jennifer Wright of Sykesville; and her great-grandparents Travis and Hazel Lighty of Abbottstown.
The family suggested memorial contributions to the Faith Lutheran Church Outdoor Children's Playground, 1700 St. Andrews Way, Eldersburg 21784.
