Despite itself, Loyola handles Rider, 85-72

'Hounds shoot 55 percent in 2nd half of MAAC win

Yes, there were glitches during Loyola's 85-72 win over Rider last night at Reitz Arena.

There were the 18 turnovers and ill-advised shots.

There was the time when Greyhound center Roderick Platt had the ball out on the break and was seriously contemplating a drive to the hoop.

But Loyola coach Dino Gaudio convinced him to slow it down, only to see point guard Jason Rowe sling the ball over to Anthony Walker, who couldn't resist chucking it up, even if his team had a 14-point lead and was barely five seconds into the shot clock.

"I wanted to go in for the dunk," Platt said after a 17-point, eight-rebound performance. "I'm able to do something like that, but the coaches were yelling for me to take it back."

But none of that mattered in the second half, because like Walker's three-point shot that gave Loyola (11-12 overall, 5-10 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) a 65-48 lead with 7: 54 remaining, it seemed everything the Greyhounds attempted went in. Loyola shot 55 percent in the half.

Rowe dominated the perimeter with 26 points, seven assists and four steals, while the inside showed superiority with Platt and Blanchard Hurd (10 points and 12 rebounds). The Greyhounds forced 20 turnovers and out-rebounded Rider (9-14, 5-10), 39-29.

The game was a matchup of teams recently revived from extended slumps. Since ending their seven-game losing streak over the last half of January, the Broncs had won their previous two games heading into Baltimore. The Greyhounds, winless for a month, had won five of their last seven games.
