DeRuyter to run defense for Navy

Cooke named site of Air Force game

February 11, 1999|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Navy coach Charlie Weatherbie has named Tim DeRuyter defensive coordinator, replacing Dick Bumpus, who accepted a similar role at the University of Houston.

DeRuyter was a linebacker at Air Force from 1982 to 1984, when Weatherbie was an assistant on the Falcons' coaching staff.

For the past four years, DeRuyter has served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Ohio University. He plans to install a 3-4 defense at Navy.

Also yesterday, Navy announced that it will face Air Force at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium on Oct. 9, marking the second straight season the Midshipmen will play at the Landover home of the Washington Redskins. The Mids will play Air Force at the stadium in 2001 and 2003, too.

Air Force will be one of five Navy opponents that played in a bowl game in 1998. Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Notre Dame and Tulane also participated in the postseason.
