THE TICKER

February 10, 1999|By JULIUS WESTHEIMER

LAST CALL: The deadline for our 1999 Dow Jones contest is only days away. Postcards -- no letters accepted -- must be postmarked by midnight Feb. 14.

Print your Dec. 31, 1999, Dow Jones forecast (no decimals) with your name, home address and phone number. Only one card per person. Give reasons if you wish, but they are not required.

Winner receives dinner for two as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ticker at his or her favorite restaurant. Runner-up, ditto for lunch. The next 10 closest get autographed copies of my book, "Generation of Wealth." Mail your card to Julius Westheimer, Ticker Contest, c/o Business News, 5th floor, The Sun, 501 N. Calvert St., Baltimore 21278.

CLUB KEYS: From Black Enterprise, here are valuable "Keys to a Profitable Investment Club": Practice dollar-cost averaging ("Regardless of whether the market is in a boom or bust, invest a set amount of money each month.") Buy growth stocks. Diversify your investments. Reinvest all profit, and dividends. Set goals and evaluate the club's performance. Invest for the long term. Create study teams.

WALL ST. VIEWS: Opinions that may prove helpful for your contest predictions. Of the commentaries I read last weekend, 75 percent were gloomy:

"Once price momentum turns down, the worst bear market in decades will likely unfold." (Winnell Report in Barron's.)

"The bear is patient. He'll slowly chip away at the bull until finally the market snaps. Then stubborn bullishness will fade." (Richard Russell Letter.)
