Florence B. Hughes, 83, homemaker, opera fan

Florence B. Hughes, a homemaker and an opera fan, died Sunday of heart failure at Manor Care Ruxton. She was 83.

The longtime Guilford resident attended concerts and the opera at the Lyric Theatre.

The former Florence Hush Bentley, who was born in San Francisco, earned a bachelor's degree from Sarah Lawrence College in the 1930s.

In 1945, she married Thomas Reeder Hughes Sr., a vice president of Baltimore Copper Paint Co., who died in 1963.

She was a member of several organizations, including the Elkridge Club, Mount Vernon Club and the Colonial Dames of America. She also had been active in the Red Cross.

Services are private.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her son, Thomas R. Hughes Jr. of Easton; two daughters, Florence "Fee" Hughes of Cockeysville and Josephine Hughes of Upperco; and three grandchildren.

Mary Esther Roane, 78, nurse in Catonsville

Mary Esther Roane, a retired registered nurse and former Catonsville resident, died Wednesday of a lung infection at a hospital in Sarasota, Fla. She was 78.

A resident of Sarasota since 1989, Mrs. Roane worked as a nurse for several Catonsville pediatricians and retired in 1984.

She had been a member of Catonsville United Methodist Church, the Catonsville Cotillion and the B and D Social Club. She was a former president of the Woman's Club of Catonsville.

The former Esther Spencer was born in Deland, Fla., and earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Emory University.

Services were held Saturday.

She is survived by her husband, G. Douglas Roane, whom she married in 1943; two daughters, Sharon E. Rawlings of Santa Ana, Calif., and Carol V. Chase of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Lee Spencer of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and three grandsons.
