Long & Foster offers scholarships for seniors

High school seniors with at least a 3.0-grade-point average, who show financial need, have held leadership positions in school and have been active in the community may be eligible for one of Long & Foster Real Estate's 60 $1,000 scholarships.

Applicants must write a short essay on either their most significant high school experience or their expectations for college. The deadline is March 1. Applications can be found at Long & Foster offices, from high school guid- ance counselors, or through Long & Foster's Internet Web site at www.longandfoster.com/scholarship.

Sales of existing homes rise 28 percent in region

The Metropolitan Regional Information System -- the multiple list system used by Realtors -- reported a 28 percent increase in sales of existing homes in December over the same period in 1997.

More than 9,300 homes, representing $1.6 billion in sales transactions, were sold through MRIS -- which covers most of Maryland, the District of Columbia and parts of Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Coldwell Banker Grempler in Joppatowne said sales associate Larry Givler was awarded the Accredited Buyer Representation (ABR) designation by the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council of the National Association of Realtors.

Long & Foster announced that nine new sales associates in Howard and Baltimore counties recently completed its Fast Start program.

Jim Foster and Richard Rowe of the company's Ellicott City office and Janice Rattely and Stan Young of its Columbia office completed the program.

Those in Baltimore County who completed the program include Joe Lobianco (Towson office), Joe DiMatteo (Rosedale), Ellen Fury (Perry Hall), J. Allen Vaughn (Timonium) and Richard B. Schultz (Eldersburg).
